🛠️ The History Behind Trollstigen
Trollstigen was officially opened by King Haakon VII on July 31st, 1936, after eight years of demanding construction work. The road was a major infrastructure project aimed at connecting the inner and outer regions of Romsdal. Building a road in such steep and rugged terrain was a remarkable engineering achievement for its time, resulting in a dramatic mountain route with eleven hairpin turns. Surrounding the road are well-known peaks like Kongen (1614 m), Dronningen (1544 m), and Bispen (1462 m) — mountains that shape both the landscape and the naming traditions of the area. Today, Trollstigen is part of Norway’s cultural heritage and a testament to what could be accomplished with simple tools, determination, and hard manual labor.

🏞️ Experiences Along Trollstigen
At the top of Trollstigen you’ll find the Trollstig Plateau, a modern viewing platform with a glass floor. From here you get a wide panoramic view of the winding mountain road and the lush valley far below. This is one of the most photographed viewpoints in Norway.
Right next to the road is Stigfossen, a powerful waterfall that plunges 320 meters down the mountainside. The water roars beneath the Stigfoss Bridge, creating a dramatic soundscape that enhances the natural experience.
If you want to explore the area on foot, there are several marked trails nearby. Some lead to peaceful lookout spots, while others take you up to ridges where you feel as if you’re floating above the landscape.
In the middle of this dramatic terrain lies Trollstigen Café, a distinctive building made of steel and glass. Here you can sit down, enjoy local dishes, and take in the view of both mountain and valley. The café is open during the season and is a natural stop for many travelers.

❄️🌨️ Road challenges
Trollstigen is one of the most spectacular mountain roads in Norway, but also one of the most vulnerable. The road is usually closed from October to May due to snow, ice, and the risk of rockslides. Spring 2024 was particularly demanding. Several landslides and unstable rock sections caused the entire road to remain closed throughout the summer season – something highly unusual.
In 2025, the season began gradually in April, with full reopening achieved in July after extensive safety work. Trollstigen is now open again, but it is always recommended to check the Norwegian Public Roads Administration before traveling to avoid wasted trips. Work to secure the mountainsides is ongoing, and weather conditions may still cause temporary closures in the future.

Completed in 1935, Stigfoss Bridge safely carries traffic over the powerful Stigfossen waterfall, right in the heart of the dramatic mountain landscape of Romsdalen. This solid stone bridge is a piece of Norwegian engineering heritage and a well-known landmark along the National Tourist Route Geiranger–Trollstigen.

🚴 Cycling Up Trollstigen
Cycling up Trollstigen is an experience unlike any other. The 10-kilometre ascent from the valley floor in Isterdalen to the top at the Trollstigen plateau includes eleven tight hairpin bends and over 300 meters of elevation gain. The road is steep but even, giving cyclists a unique opportunity to experience the mountains up close, surrounded by waterfalls and towering cliffs.
Many riders choose an e-bike to make the climb more manageable, especially if they want to enjoy the views without spending all their energy on the pedals. An electric bike provides a helpful boost on the way up but still lets you feel the satisfaction of reaching the top by your own effort. Standard road bikes are also common, especially among experienced riders seeking a true mountain challenge in spectacular surroundings.
The descent is steep and requires good brakes and full concentration. The road is narrow and sometimes busy with cars, so it’s best to start early in the day when traffic is lighter. This is important for safety and for getting the best experience. Trollstigen is part of the National Tourist Route Geiranger–Trollstigen, and the combination of nature and road makes this a memorable cycling adventure for both locals and visitors.
